The Elite Player Performance Plan

English Premier League Elite Player Performance Plan

The English Premier Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP) is a program implemented by the English Football League (EFL) to help develop and improve the quality of football clubs in the lower divisions of English football. The EPPP was introduced in 2012 and replaced the previous Youth Development system. The English Premier Elite Player Performance Plan is a five-tiered system that assesses the quality and performance of football academies at different levels. Clubs are given a ranking from Category 1 to Category 5 based on their facilities, coaching staff, financial support, and overall performance. Category 1 academies are considered the highest quality, while Category 5 academies are considered the lowest. An example of a Category 1 academy would be every team in the premier league apart from Brentford FC, meaning that those in the highest tier meet the necessary target set out.

Why was the Elite Player Performance Plan introduced

The The Elite Player Performance Plan was introduced to address some of the concerns about the development of young players in English football. The aim is to improve the quality of coaching and facilities, increase the number of home-grown players in English football, and enhance the competitiveness of English teams at both the domestic and international level.

One of the key features of the The Elite Player Performance Plan is the emphasis on developing a player-centric approach to coaching and development. Clubs are required to have a clear philosophy and approach to player development that is based on the needs and abilities of individual players. This includes providing opportunities for players to play at different levels and in different positions to help them develop a range of skills and experience.

Often clubs will hold values such as ‘Humility, Give It Your All, Respect and Hardwork etc, meaning players and staff have to uphold these values which support there success as Category 1 academy, attracting the very best personal.

Education and Welfare in The Elite Player Performance Plan

Another important aspect of the The Elite Player Performance Plan is the emphasis on education and welfare. Clubs are required to provide education and support for young players to help them develop both academically and socially. This includes providing access to tutors, counselling services, and support for players who are struggling with personal or family issues.

The EPPP has been credited with helping to improve the quality of youth development in English football. There has been a significant increase in the number of young players who have come through the academy system and gone on to play for the first team. The The Elite Player Performance Plan has also helped to improve the standard of coaching and facilities at youth level, which has had a positive impact on the overall competitiveness of English football.

Limitations of The Elite Player Performance Plan

However, there have also been criticisms of the The Elite Player Performance Plan. Some have argued that the focus on facilities and rankings has led to a homogenization of youth development, with clubs becoming more focused on achieving a certain status rather than on developing players. Others have suggested that the emphasis on education and welfare has led to a neglect of the competitive aspects of youth football, with some clubs becoming more focused on providing a comfortable environment for young players rather than pushing them to develop their skills and compete at a high level.

Despite these criticisms, the EPPP remains a key part of the development of youth football in England. It has helped to improve the standard of coaching and facilities, increase the number of home-grown players, and enhance the competitiveness of English football. While there are certainly areas for improvement, the EPPP has been a positive step towards improving the quality of football in England.

Some extra reading for you

To get into a category 1 can be challenging and of course, you need to be scouted and have the potential to become a first team player.

However, there are some things you can do put yourself ahead.

  1. Get yourself an agent – they will have the links and will be able to get to the right people. There are so many good footballers – however, getting noticed can sometimes be the barrier.
  2. Record yourself – have footage so you can send clips to scouts. More specifically, attributes that make you a good player and different from the rest.
  3. Eat and training according to the demands of football – you need to eat the right things in the correct amounts. Your training should be football specific and help you improve performances throughout your footballing career.
