How Does Scientific Research Work?

Research is a fundamental process that drives the advancement of knowledge across various fields but how does scientific research work? It is through rigorous investigation, critical analysis, and systematic experimentation that researchers can draw conclusions that inform nutritional practice. This is why when you have a dodgy TikToker or Instagram influencer mentioning their amazing new supplements or branded drinks – you should think has gone through all of the below.

How spot Red Flags & convert to Green

Any of the following should be enough to raise a red flag:

“Do your own research” -> “Here is a research source you can read to further explain the subject”

“It’s proven to work” -> “We have a large body of evidence that suggests/directs us” (unless it is a law)

“This food is toxic” -> “Under the definition – food cannot be toxic but we can opt for more nutrient dense foods”

“The news/social said” -> “This is a small part of a wider research group and here is how it would apply to you”

Any of these should raise questions. However, if you want to follow someone who does not follow an evidence-based approach then that is totally fine. Provided you are not being lied to and being sold an overly expensive product. If something works for you then.. keep going. Just be sure that it is safe and the person who is recommending to buy has given a strong rationale based on truth.

Anything that Gary Brecka says is what the Gen-Z people would call a walking red flag.

Back to the research

Every research study begins with a question or hypothesis. Pretty much we are trying to figure out what we want to find out and think about what may happen based on our current understanding. The research question drives the entire study, guiding the methodology, analysis, and interpretation of results. A well-defined question ensures that the study is focused and that the outcomes are relevant and meaningful. As we progress up the pyramid methodologies may change and our interpretation of the results – Therefore, when someone is using evidence they should mention whereabouts that study sits on the research pyramid. The higher the better in terms of a stronger body of evidence and reduced bias but even if we get to a meta analysis we still may need more research before fully understanding how something works.

Why published research is credible

You may be surprised to know that some research is actually a bit rubbish and it takes someone who is experienced in the field to acknowledge the strength and limitations of research papers. However, before a study is published, it typically undergoes peer review, where other experts in the field evaluate the research for its validity, significance, and originality. Peer review acts as a quality control mechanism, ensuring that only robust and credible research is published. Unlike what you see on social media – research has to go through a process something that I am going through now to get three articles published…. take a while!

Research proves everything

Incorrect.

We research to point us in a direction and as practitioners we use it to make the best choices for our clients. It is not something to say.. researchers have proven that this works. The only time we can say this is when something because a law – for example.. energy in versus energy out for weight loss or weight gain. This is something called the law of thermodynamics: Research Article on the Law of Thermodynamics – An epidemiologic and metabolic approach – PubMed (nih.gov)

Conclusion: The Role of Research in Advancing Knowledge

Research is a meticulous process that involves asking the right questions, designing robust methodologies, collecting and analysing data, and interpreting the results. However, research is often misused and there is now a trend to use it to persuade people into false hope and sell them a dodgy product. There are some good products with research but you will be surprised that there are only a few with a good body of supporting evidence: Supplements | Australian Institute of Sport (ais.gov.au)
